There simply aren't enough words to describe this new MV album! Cedric's delicate and haunting vocals are just superb and mesmerising, and its nice to see the boys slowing things down for a change. This is an 180-degree turn from Bedlam in Goliath (their weakest so far in my opinion, although the Australian tour edition DVD video tracks are quite decent in small doses since the humour of the clips softens the aural onslaught somewhat), however the more subdued bonus audio tracks included on the DVD are definitely more on par with Octahedron. While completely different, I rate it right up there with both De-loused and Frances for outright brilliance (Frances is probably first, followed by De-loused and then Octahedron, but not by much).Soulful, sublime and sensitive - three words that I wouldn't have thought possible in the context of MV music, but believe me, they pull it off with understated elegance and consummate ease! The creative output by these guys (Omar's solo work alone numbers about 14 albums since 2004!) recently has been quite phenomenal, and you have to hand it to them for the sheer variety and level of experimentation that is evident in their collective body of work to date. It may not be for everyone, but once hooked (like me) its like manna from heaven.Frankly, I liken this amazing and innovative group to Pink Floyd of the sixties and seventies (best band of all time), and I think its a privilege to be able to witness MV's evolution first hand (I'd give anything to go back in time and see the Floyd in their heyday!).I can't wait to see what these guys put out next, but one things for sure; it will be completely different yet again (Omar's already set to release yet another solo album in the next few months).Overall a balanced, mature, evocative and typically adventurous album (the best musicians develop and evolve over time as all intelligent beings should).Interestingly, the song title 'Cotopaxi' was also the name of the freighter that was stranded in the Mongolian desert in the 1977 sci-fi classic 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (which could just be coincidental, although it seems rather unlikely given the penchant of MV for the science fiction genre).(Five) star perfection from me all the way! Best Prog Rock band since Pink Floyd and Tool.
