I wear skirts & dresses all year long. Not for any reason other than because that's what I find comfortable & flattering. However, I also live in the frozen north. Which means in the winter, layers are my friend & I wear petticoats as they were originally intended. I've got well made white & black cotton pettis that keep me cozy, but I love the idea of a flash of color when I move my skirts, so I couldn't resist adding this red petti to my closet.I'm disappointed honestly. If I had it to do over again I think I'd buy another white petti & attempt to dye it. It isn't Horrible. It looks very much like the photo. It's very, very thin. Not the sort of thing there is much purpose in layering, but, it doesn't really look nice enough to wear on it's own in the summer. Not that you couldn't, but it doesn't drape as nicely or appear as finished as my other pettis either. The elastic waist rather than a drawstring is part of the problem. The reason pettis like this have two layers at the bottom of the skirt (not that you can tell from the photo here) is for warmth. By bulking out the bottom of the open skirt it prevents cold air from coming in at the ankle. This has the two layers, but they're sew so flat together that they're useless. Honestly, you can even See that there is a second layer in person unless you're physically holding them in your hand. Which means even if you're just after the look & not the warmth, you aren't getting it.The crochet trim on this is a very, very loose crochet. I haven't washed this yet but I'll bet some of it comes off in the wash or tares within the first few washings.I guess I should have known better. I have a pair of pettipants from this same company. I couldn't wear them when I got them, they were too small so they sat in my closet, but I've lost 70lbs & now they're too big on me. Of course they shouldn't be, they came with a drawstring. Wasn't until I took them back out of my closet to try to wear them this winter that I realized it's only a half draw string attached to more elastic. Elastic that broke, sitting in my closet after one washing & being hung dry. Yes, elastic can get dry over-stretch after sitting, but that isn't what happened. It isn't dry. Just made with low cost materials & poorly sewn. I took a chance hoping the pants were just a fluke. Interestingly, the ruffle layer on the bottom of the petti pants is fuller & does it's job better than this. The long & the short of it is, this company cuts corners. They're trying to make a product that looks like it's good quality, charging like it's good quality, without bothering to actually make it good quality. I suppose they figure most people won't wear the product for daily use?I'm tempted to rip out the elastic, add a draw string & see if that improves the drape any so I can wear this for a spring skirt. It's useless as a petti.I suppose if you needed a summer petti for an SCA event or something this would do in a pinch. That flat sewn lower ruffle layer though just wont give the right look if you're a stickler for detail, even if the elastic is well hidden. It is true to size.
