Description
Best known as a songwriter, Pomus began his career as a Blues-shouter in 1940s New York City, following in the footsteps of his heroes Big Joe Turner and Wynonie Harris. For the first time ever on CD, this CD explores Pomus' secret history as a recording artist which, coincidentally, also reflects the amazing history of R&B from mid-'40s risqu‚ Blues and jazzy Jump tunes to mid-'50s screaming Rock 'N' Roll. Doc Pomus is acclaimed as one of the truly classic songwriters... sometimes alone, sometimes in the company of peers like Leiber and Stoller, and frequently with composer-partner Mort Shuman. Seemingly effortlessly, he wrote or co-wrote 24k rock and pop classics by the bushel including such classics as 'Teenager In Love', 'Lonely Avenue', 'Can't Get Used To Losing You', 'His Latest Flame', 'Sweets For My Sweet', 'Little Sister', 'Viva Las Vegas', 'Save The Last Dance For Me', 'Turn Me Loose', 'A Mess Of Blues' and countless other award-winning tunes of the '50s and '60s. Rev-Ola. 2008.

Doc was a very good blues singer-not country blues , but urban blues from the 40's. One can see and feel the beginnings ofrock-and-roll emerging from the swing era. His acknowledged debt to Big Joe Turner is apparent.
