Forget everything you thought you knew about Little Red Riding Hood! She's no shrinking violet--she's a freakin' kick-butt action hero!Edmund's book is a worthy entry into the pantheon of YA literature that does not disappoint. In fact, it absolutely succeeds where so many other "updates" and "reboots" fails, as honors the familiar childhood story but makes it wholly accessible and relevant and engaging for today's readers.Red Riding starts (literally!) at full-throttle and doesn't let up. The read is fast-paced, engaging and cinematic--the experience is like watching a great action film. Yet, even as the action moves forward at break-neck speed, the reader never feels cheated out of the richness and texture and intrigue that make up a great yarn. The main character, Red, is instantly engaging. She's tough and lippy and authentic and vulnerable all at the same time. Edmund's obvious talent for capturing character comes through, as Red comes off amazingly real even as the world she inhabits is so fanatical. She could be my own 14 year-old daughter.Even more, the mythology and world--and stellar supporting characters--make for a wild and fun ride that readers of all ages and types can enjoy. It would make a GREAT gift for tween and young teen readers, especially. It's got everything my kids loved at that age in spades!I don't want to say too much more and ruin the story for you. Just dive on in, folks! Great read. I look forward to hearing more from the Alpha Huntress...and from Neo Edmund.
