Description
One Book, One Minnesota Selection for Summer 2021 Introducing Cash Blackbear, a young Ojibwe woman whose visions and grit help solve a brutal murder in this award-winning debut. 1970s, Red River Valley between North Dakota and Minnesota: Renee “Cash” Blackbear is 19 years old and tough as nails. She lives in Fargo, North Dakota, where she drives truck for local farmers, drinks beer, plays pool, and helps solve criminal investigations through the power of her visions. She has one friend, Sheriff Wheaton, her guardian, who helped her out of the broken foster care system. One Saturday morning, Sheriff Wheaton is called to investigate a pile of rags in a field and finds the body of an Indian man. When Cash dreams about the dead man’s weathered house on the Red Lake Reservation, she knows that’s the place to start looking for answers. Together, Cash and Wheaton work to solve a murder that stretches across cultures in a rural community traumatized by racism, genocide, and oppression.

With all the well deserved acclaim this author and tgis book have received it hardly seems necessary to add a review but this book is not only the best first in a series mystery I’ve read in a long long time,It’s one if the best novels i’ve read about indigenous people in a long time. And while the story is centered on a murder that must be solved, this is much more than a mystery book. This is a rich and engrossing novel, beautifully written, about a truly fascinating and complex character, and the world she occupies. Cash Blackbear’s humanity, her pain, her sorrow, her compassion, her fears, and that of several other characters both major and minor, is so beautifully depicted.Every event and every character has a deep human truth, that I found myself forgetting that I was reading a book, and felt as if I was experiencing these events and people.Never once does the author mislead or misdirect with regards to the twists and turns ofbthecstory; there is no manipulation for the sake of suspense. This is just a really good story, filled with great compassion, about a sensitive and vulnerable but tough young woman beautifully told.I can’t wait to read the next one.
